I’m finally getting on board with the jumpsuit trend! A jumpsuit is a brilliant concept for everyday and fancy events. With the top and bottom attached, you get an entire outfit in one piece of clothing! That means you have fewer decisions to make in the morning to get ready. You can just throw one on and go. The best part of wearing a jumpsuit is that they are super comfy in the midsection. You don’t have a binding waistband to deal with!

Styles of jumpsuits

There are so many different styles of jumpsuits out there.

Styles of jumpsuits
Top From Left to Right: Terry Drawstring Waist Jumpsuit | Apron Jumpsuit | Collared Short-Sleeve Utility Coverall Jumpsuit | Collared Long-Sleeve Utility Coverall Jumpsuit | Bottom From Left to Right: Floral Tie Waist Jumpsuit | Tie Waist Wide-Leg Jumpsuit | Wrap-Neck Jumpsuit | Sequined Wrap-Top Jumpsuit

From super casual jumpsuits of French terry cloth with a tank shaped top and drawstring waist, to apron jumpsuits that are reminiscent of overalls without the buckles. To utility coverall jumpsuits in thick denim, cotton or twill with short or long sleeves.

And wide-leg printed or solid colored jumpsuits that can be dressed up or down. And dressier jumpsuits with a halter neck or a wrap top and sequins (super trendy) that you can dress up for a cocktail party or special occasions.

There’s a jumpsuit for any event and every day of the week. Choose one with rayon fabric and a simple silhouette that you can dress up or down and you’ll find your jumpsuit is a super versatile addition to your wardrobe!

Buy one in a bright color to make a statement and light up your skin tone. Or choose one in a fun pattern to take on vacation with you and you’ll wear it constantly.

As someone whose top is smaller than her bottom, I have a hard time finding dresses that work. And I assumed jumpsuits wouldn’t fit my body type for the same reason. If this is you, too, you may be pleasantly surprised.

I tried a few on and was shocked that they fit.

First, I tried on a pink utility casual jumpsuit at Old Navy with long sleeves. This is a size large. I wear size 12 jeans, and it fits!

Black loafers wouldn’t be the shoes I’d choose to wear with this jumpsuit, so please ignore them, ha.

It didn’t feel like me though, so it didn’t come home with me.

I felt encouraged enough by the fit to try a simple black jumpsuit at Loft with short sleeves and wide legs.

This jumpsuit has a v-neck and muscle tee cap sleeves, wide legs, and a cinched waist with an attached belt. I’d like this jumpsuit better if the belt were loose. That way, I could use one of my own belts to define the waistline and add more visual interest.

I was pleasantly surprised that it fit. And started imagining wearing it as a comfy alternative to shorts in warmer weather. Or dressing it up for date nights or even for more formal events.

How to style a black jumpsuit

If you find a jumpsuit a little intimidating, I’m here to show you all the different ways you can wear a classic style jumpsuit for casual outings, for work if your dress code allows it, and even for a dressy special event.

If you’re looking for fresh ways to style your jumpsuit, let’s look at how you can pair different tops and shoes to create fresh looks.

A solid color black jumpsuit is the perfect jumpsuit because it’s so easy to create a ton of stylish outfit ideas with it.

In this blog post, I’ll show you 15 outfits with style tips for bringing each look together.

How to wear a black jumpsuit casually

To create casual looks, wear your jumpsuit with casual shoes and tops.

The best way to create a casual look is to wear a pair of sneakers. If you’re wondering if you can wear sneakers with wide leg jumpsuits, you absolutely can!

With white sneakers and an oversized white blouse

These white leather Stan Smith sneakers are super versatile and comfy. They have a very cushioned and wide toe box. The solid white leather finish with a gold splash on the ankle makes them sneakers you can wear with just about anything.

They create a cool and effortless look here, paired with an oversized white blouse tied at the waist and a black casual crossbody bag. Curious about other ways to wear white sneakers? Check out my post, 23 Fresh Looks: How to Wear White Sneakers All Year Long.

With black thong Birkenstocks and a sweatshirt

In this next look, I’m wearing black thong Birkenstocks and a black crossbody bag.

This is the perfect outfit for easy morning sightseeing or a casual walk to brunch from your hotel room. Thong Birkenstocks are comfy and casual. Just drape a sweatshirt around your shoulders in case you need it.

With tan leather flip-flops

I imagine creating this kind of simple look all the time in the summer for dining outside, meeting up with a friend, or on vacation.

The look has simple leather flip-flops and a matching crossbody bag to tie the color into a second spot on the outfit.

With a tan duster sweater and black slide shoes

This is by far the coziest outfit ever. Wear this if you’re entertaining at home but want to look more elevated.

with a duster cardigan and black slides

Jumpsuit (I’m a size 12 on the bottom with a 36-B bust and wear a medium)

Pair a jumpsuit with a long sweater like this tan duster cardigan if you want to feel like you’re wearing a bathrobe with pajamas. Push the sleeves up on the sweater to help define your waistline. And to make the look cool and not frumpy. It’s a little hard to see, but these black slides have a giant tortoise shell buckle on them, elevating them from ordinary black slides.

With a light denim jacket and leather flip-flops

With this jumpsuit, a hip length denim jacket is a perfect choice to cover your arms on a cool morning or heading into air conditioning. This light blue denim jacket is slightly oversized and more casual because of its lighter color. I bring it out in the spring and summer when color tones lighten up.

These leather flip-flops are the flat shoes I wear again and again in the summer. The leather looks great with so many things, yet they’re so comfy.

Roll up the sleeves on the jacket to help define the waistline and you have a casual look that’s perfect for vacation, wine tasting or a concert.

With a dark jean jacket and brown clogs

Here’s a look that’s a great option for heading to a farmer’s market. I’ve got a dark denim jacket that creates a dressier look than the other denim jacket. The clogs have a laid back boho feel.

A straw bag says that temperatures are warming up! And is perfect for veggies at the farm stand, a picnic lunch at a winery, or a book and water bottle.

Next, let’s see looks that are a bit more elevated for work.

How to wear a black jumpsuit for work

If your workplace dress code allows jumpsuits, choose shoes with a heel and wear a coat or tailored jacket over top.

With a trench coat and black block heel slides

I can’t resist a sharp-looking trench coat outfit! For transitional weather, a trench coat is a great way to look really put together. It provides a classic and elevated feel to anything you put on with it.

I’m wearing black 2.75” block heel slides. They are the perfect high heels since they’re comfortable all day and stylish. This is a look that easily takes you from day to night.

With a black blazer and tan cap toe ballet flats

Adding a black blazer over the top of your jumpsuit creates a sharp look you can wear into a meeting. Or if you work from home and want to be comfortable and look put together for Zoom calls, just throw a blazer over the top of your jumpsuit.

You could also wear a white blazer here for a chic black and white look.

Cap toe flats are a classic statement shoe and a black tote bag says you’re all business and ready to go!

With a dark denim jacket and black pointy toe flats

A dark fitted denim jacket has a more professional vibe than a lighter jacket.

Black pointy toe flats are work appropriate and also elongate the leg line.

Elevate the look for work even more with a black tote bag that fits your laptop.

With a brown leather jacket and ankle boots

If your workplace is a more creative environment that allows you some freedom in how you dress, top your jumpsuit with a brown leather jacket, or a black leather jacket, if that’s what you have. It’s an instant look-maker that creates a cool vibe that says you’re a bit of a free spirit who likes to do her own thing.

Pairing brown with the black jumpsuit is a very chic color combination. These black pointy toe sock boots with a contrasting brown heel pick up the brown in the jacket. This is a look you can easily take from day to night.

With a black cardigan and tan slides

This is a more casual look for a more casual workplace. Wear a fitted black cardigan to give some structure to this jumpsuit. Wearing black with black keeps the color palette more professional.

Casual tan slides finish the look, but you can always swap them out for pointy toe flats for a more elevated feel.

With a cream tweed sweater and black d’Orsay heels

This look makes the perfect jumpsuit outfit for a business cocktail party or work special occasion when you need to be dressed up but don’t want to wear a dress.

Jumpsuit (I’m a size 12 on the bottom with a 36-B bust and wear a medium)

This Chanel inspired tweed sweater makes such a sophisticated and mature look. I love the look of tweed sweaters and they’re trending right now, but many of them have gold buttons and pockets that make them too ornate for me. This one I love! And it’s so soft and comfortable!

Paired with this jumpsuit and my favorite black d’Orsay heels, it instantly makes such a classy look.

How to wear a black jumpsuit for a dressy special event

Let’s look at outfits for events where you need to dress up.

With a cream tweed sweater and strappy black heels

Here’s the same look you saw above, but with strappy black heels instead. Strappy heels are the best shoes to wear to dress up your jumpsuit for a night out. Choose a block heel and they’ll be more comfortable. This makes such a stylish outfit!

Simply switching out the heels makes this look ready for a party rather than a business event.

With a black tweed jacket and strappy heels

Here’s one last look. This time with a hip-length zip up black tweed jacket and those strappy black heels again.

You could also wear a black moto jacket here for a night out on the town.

What to wear with a black jumpsuit

A black jumpsuit is such a good choice because you can wear it with so many things. Choose casual flat shoes like sneakers, Birkenstocks, leather flip-flops or black or tan slides. Or pick pointy toe flats, heels, strappy heeled sandals or block heel slides to dress it up. Over top, wear a jean jacket, trench coat, black blazer, tweed sweater, tweed jacket or leather jacket.

Take this outfit inspiration and experiment to see all the great ways you can wear your jumpsuit. And have fun with it! XO, Marya

  1. Hi! I was curious where you purchased your brown leather jacket shown with the jumpsuit. So cute!!!

    1. Hi Allison! The jacket is the Max Studio Classic Faux Leather Jacket in cognac and it’s a little hard to find right now. This is the jacket. There are a lot of other brown leather jackets in the stores right now, though. XO, Marya
