Faux leather leggings have been a popular choice for a little while now.

I’ve tried them a few times but they weren’t comfortable and didn’t look good. Since my body type is a size 12 on the bottom and larger on the bottom than on the top, tight leather adds visual weight and shows every lump and bump.

But this year leather pants have come a long way. And their comfy cousins, coated jeans and pants, are everywhere in all kinds of styles and shapes. I tried coated wide-leg jeans during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they worked! Plus, they’re so comfortable.  The material is thin and soft inside. And the wide leg is modern and gives the look of legs for days.

Leather pants are a statement piece and the leather really grabs the eye. They’re easier to create stylish looks with than you may expect.  In this post, see 20 leather pants outfits to make with your real leather or faux leather pants for casual outings, work, or a night out. Plus, see a roundup of faux leather and coated pants to try.

What looks best with leather pants?

Pair your leather pants with neutral colors or a pop of color like bright pink, deep red, olive green, or royal blue. Wear them with everything from a simple turtleneck sweater to an oversized sweater, a cardigan, a striped shirt, a button-down shirt, or a sweatshirt. Layer a blazer or statement coat like a black trench coat for a confident sharp look. For shoes, slip on a pair of heels, black espadrilles, ankle boots, loafers, Mary Janes, or Adidas sneakers.

Ready to look at some stylish outfit ideas? Let’s dive in!

1. With a black turtleneck sweater

This is legit the simplest outfit you can make and one of the most foolproof ways to wear your leather pants. Choose a matching belt to make the look pop. And if you think you can’t wear flat shoes with wide-leg pants, notice how pointy-toe shoes in a matching color peek out from the hem of the pants and extend the length of the legs.

2. With a black turtleneck and black trench coat

I love this whole look from head to toe. A black trench coat or long black statement coat is perfect with leather pants. I prefer this to a leather jacket since that would be a lot of leather and too matchy-matchy.  I’m adding my favorite Paris hat that’s perfect in the case of rain.

3. With a striped top

A good-looking black striped top is an outfit maker. This one has buttons on the shoulders which helps to visually widen the upper body. If you’re smaller up top than on the bottom, create balanced proportions by wearing a top like this.

4. With a cream sweater

The sleeves on this sweater are long and flared, giving it an elevated look. Wearing matching black ankle wrap pointy toe pumps with black faux leather pants takes this look to the next level and makes it one you can wear for a night out.

You may notice that my accessories all coordinate. A simple tip for putting together easy elevated looks is to buy accessories that easily work together. My black and gold belt match my black bag with gold hardware, my gold necklace and earrings, and my black high heels.

5. With a black blazer

This double-breasted black blazer is a cross between a classic blazer and an oversized blazer. It’s slightly longer in the hips but fits well in the arms and upper body. It has a work-ready look with these wide-leg coated jeans. Pointy-toed heels dress the look up even more and extend the leg line.

6. With a cable-knit sweater

Look for a short sweater to wear with your high-waisted leather pants and you have the perfect proportions to easily front tuck that sweater. Don’t worry, these sweaters usually are longer than a crop top and are very wearable with high-waisted pants. Add black ankle boots that match your pants and extend the leg line.

7. With a Breton stripe shirt

If you’re a regular reader then you know I can’t resist a striped shirt for instant visual interest. If your upper body is smaller than your lower body then stripes draw the eye across and create more balanced hourglass proportions. And this boatneck top with a slightly wider neckline does that even more.

Pointy-toe Mary Jane flats give a playful feel.

8. With a textured white sweater

When I picked up this sweater during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, this is exactly how I envisioned wearing it. These are two simple pieces with different textures that create an outfit that’s anything but boring. A white sweater with heavy cabling adds visual interest. And coated black pants draw in the eye and make this look pop.

This look would also be perfect with brown leather pants.

9. With a gray sweatshirt

This is a fun and cool casual look for a night out. I’ve discovered that one of my favorite ways to make edgy outfits is to combine sporty pieces with unexpected pieces. For this look, I’m pairing my favorite gray sweatshirt with these coated pants. If you have leather joggers, you could also wear them here.

Black Adidas tennis shoes give a sporty edgy vibe. This black Paris baseball cap is my favorite hat of all time. It’s perfect if you wear a lot of black like I do.

We’ll call this look “sporty chic” and it’s one you can even wear to the grocery store.

It’s not pictured here, but an oversized denim jacket is also a great option here if that feels like you.

10. With a graphic tee and trench coat

This graphic tee is an old J.Crew tee with two dogs on the front. I love it so much and have had it for a long time. I will never get rid of it. It’s fun and chic with gray and black. It’s perfect with a pair of leather pants. For a flash of shine at the feet, I’m wearing silver Mary Janes. If you’re experimenting with silver shoes, a great way to style them is with black. Choose silver jewelry to match your shoes. A black trench coat adds a classic touch to the look.

11. With a gray pullover turtleneck sweater

This gray turtleneck sweater creates a slouchy look when you front-tuck it into wide-leg pants. A black belt with a gold buckle helps to dress up the look. And gold accessories draw the gold throughout the outfit. Black pointy-toe Mary Janes adds a fun finish.

12. With a white button-down shirt

This look was an experiment that I ended up loving. Turns out a white button-down shirt works with just about anything. It creates a tailored and structured look. To create an interesting juxtaposition and an easy-going vibe, I did a messy roll of my sleeves.

13. With a relaxed fit cardigan

This cozy sweater is in my fall capsule wardrobe. I love the cabling that gives it visual interest. Unfortunately, it’s sold out at H&M online, but it’s still in my local store so maybe it will be there for you too? Button it up like a shirt and give it a front tuck to define your waistline. Black patent leather loafers give a preppy look.

14. With a striped button-down and black sweater vest

Let’s call this look “relaxed chic”. Leaving the striped button-down shirt untucked and rolling up the sleeves gives an easygoing vibe.  It also creates color contrast between the striped shirt and black sweater vest helping to define the waistline. Then the black espadrilles give a casual chic look.  I love the relaxed drape of the wide-leg pants over top of the espadrilles.

15. With a short camel coat

I’m so in love with this black leather pants outfit! This camel coat is a statement coat that creates a chic look with leather pants. Start with a column of black with a black top and black leather pants. Those same black espadrilles from the last look are a perfect match with their camel woven-wedge and black suede. Add some gold jewelry and a bag and it’s so good-looking for date night!

16. With a black trench coat

When you add a statement coat to your outfit, you’re adding a third piece that instantly adds interest to your look. This is another simple black-and-white look that’s elevated by the coat, the pops of gold accessories, and the chic espadrilles. A black trench coat is a timeless tailored piece that creates a confident vibe.

17. With a black and white striped cardigan

This Chanel-inspired J.Crew patch pocket striped lady sweater is so good-looking, it makes an outfit with very little effort. It’s so versatile that it’s one of my absolute must-haves for cooler weather. You can totally wear it buttoned up over a tank top or long-sleeve shirt and leather pants. A black and gold belt ties in the gold from the buttons. And espadrilles create an easy-going but elevated look.

18. With a black tie-neck blouse

Here’s a classy look for a night out. It would be even better with a black trench coat thrown over your shoulders. A tie-neck blouse is a classic that says timeless elegance. Pair it with your black leather pants and a pair of pointy-toe pumps. These are ankle strap pumps that are surprisingly comfortable.

19. With a cream sweater and Houndstooth blazer

Yup, you can wear a plaid blazer with your leather pants for a look that’s a little bit preppy that we’ll call “professor chic”. I’m wearing espadrilles here but loafers would be a perfect tie-in with the preppy blazer. Wear this look to work for a fun change.

20. With a cream puff-sleeve sweater

As the weather changes, a short-sleeved sweater is a great way to add some warmth. This is the perfect outfit for a night out. The black coated pants are edgy and this puff-sleeve sweater dresses the look up. Black espadrilles give some height.

The little details make a difference with a black belt and gold buckle, gold necklace, and earrings.
