Hi friends! The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is now open to the general public and pieces go back to full price on August 7th. That means there’s more time to try new pieces and return what you don’t love!

Sold out items are a real thing and it’s frustrating to have your eye on something and then have it be gone. If the item will allow it (not all do), put the pieces you want in your wish list in every size that may work and each color you’d consider. Then sign up for alerts to get notified when it comes back in stock. If you’re on the homepage of the app, look for the bell icon in the top right. Turn on “back in stock” notifications and “push notifications”. If it was me, I’d also check the website periodically for it. At the start of the 3rd week of the sale, that’s July 24th, returns really start coming in, freeing up pieces that will get re-sold.

My Nordstrom Anniversary Sale items have been slowly trickling in. Here’s what I tried with my thoughts on what worked and what didn’t. I include the size I ordered and the color.

For reference, I’m 5’6″, 165 pounds, and wear size 12 jeans. With a 36-B bust, I typically wear a small or medium top.

Let’s look at some outfits!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Outfits

Outfit 1: Halogen Funnel Neck Cotton Blend Sweater (Medium, Arctic Wolf)+ Pistola Monroe High Waist Crop Cigarette Jeans (size 32) + Nordstrom Miller 2 Water Resistant Boot (9M, Burgundy)

Funnel neck sweater, jeans and Chelsea boots

Let’s talk about this sweater. It’s made of slim ribbed sweater material and comes an inch or two below my hip bone. The slash neckline is a bit more elevated than usual. The sleeves are long and come to the knuckles with a slit of several inches at the hem of the wrist. You definitely can’t wash dishes in this sweater. You’ll absolutely need to fold the sleeves back when you’re eating dinner so they don’t drag in your food. Even so, the sleeves create an elevated look as you’ll see in the next picture. I love that it’s a bit unusual and can be dressed up or down.

These jeans are so soft and comfortable, I don’t want to take them off. They have a really good cotton ratio for my curvy bottom half at 80% cotton and 20% other stretchy fibers. With an 11-inch waist rise, they stop an inch below my belly button. I ended up sizing up to a 32 and I think I can wear my usual size, a 31. They have slight bleaching on the front of the leg and very light distressing on the pockets and hem. I love that they have a finished hem because they’re more versatile and could even be work jeans in a casual workplace. They are true straight jeans and the hem is almost the same width as the knee. I would keep these if I didn’t already have a pair that’s very similar. They’re currently sold out, but keep an eye out in the third week of the sale, and fingers crossed, some will come back in stock.

When I ordered the burgundy waterproof Chelsea boots, I was eyeing them for our trip to Scotland in the spring. I was curious to see if the color leans more toward brown or burgundy. They do have dark red undertones but read brown in certain lights. And they are super comfortable and soft inside. I tried them with thick cotton socks and wool socks and both work great. They are a perfect match for this Frye belt I got a few months ago at Nordstrom Rack. They fit true to size.

My belt bag is new but from Amazon. I love how the grey quilting, brown trim, and brown embroidered camera strap match the belt and boots so perfectly. Choose “Quilted Grey” at check-out.

Outfit 2: Halogen Funnel Neck Cotton Blend Sweater (Medium, Arctic Wolf) + Dolce Vita Flin Knee High Boot (9M, Truffle suede)

Here’s that cream sweater again. I love how it can go from being worn with jeans to a skirt. The lengthy sleeve becomes an elevating feature. I paired it with the black skirt from my last post, 22 Easy + Stylish Black Skirt Outfits for Everyday, and knee-high boots.

Let’s talk about the boots for a second. First, they have a 3-inch block heel. I forgot how high 3 inches feels. I’m out of practice with heels this high and wasn’t loving them. Plus, the shaft is 16 inches, which brings these boots up high so they hit right at my knee line. It’s possible they’ll work for someone who is taller than 5’6″, but for me, they were a miss.

Outfit 3: Caslon Long Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt (Medium, Black) + Pistola Monroe High Waist Crop Cigarette Jeans (size 32)

You’ve already seen these jeans. And the Coach bag, belt, and loafers were pieces I already owned. So the new piece here is the long sleeve crewneck shirt. It’s a thin fabric that’s 60% cotton and 40% modal and I wish I’d sized up to a large. It fits tight in the upper arms. My triceps have a bit of a waddle and when I first put the shirt on I had to adjust the sleeves considerably to make them comfortable to wear. You can see that it puckers a bit on the chest near the underarm. With that said, because of the close fit, this will make a good base layer underneath a blazer or cardigan.

Outfit 4: Steve Madden Belted Houndstooth Check Trench Coat (Medium, Beige Multi) + Caslon Long Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt (Medium, Black) + Pistola Monroe High Waist Crop Cigarette Jeans (size 32)

If you’re wearing a simple outfit, an iconic statement coat makes the look come alive. That’s what I was hoping this trench coat would do thanks to its black and brown checkered houndstooth pattern. The material is thin and soft and there are shoulder pads in the shoulders that are bigger than I expected. I wish the material had more substance for a stiff and crisp look. As a pro, a size medium fit my arms and my lower body, which can sometimes be a challenge.

Outfit 5: French Connection Mozart Mixed Stitch Cotton Sweater (Small in Winter White) + Gap Factory Denim Skirt

If you dress more minimally, texture is everything for adding visual interest to your look. And this little white 100% cotton sweater has loads of it. It’s also a shorter length, which is perfect if you plan to front-tuck your sweater or leave the hem out with high-waisted denim.

You can wear it now on cooler evenings or in AC with a denim skirt, shorts, or linen pants. In this look, I’m pairing it with a denim skirt from Gap Factory.

You can also wear it later in cooler weather with jeans and white sneakers.

Outfit 6: French Connection Mozart Mixed Stitch Cotton Sweater (Small in winter white) + J.Crew Factory Wide Leg Cropped Jeans

And even wear it with black wide leg pants. For fun, I’m wearing them with my new New Balance sneakers in the next look!

Outfit 7: French Connection Mozart Mixed Stitch Cotton Sweater (Small in winter white) + Old Navy Wide Leg Cropped Pants + New Balance 574 Sneaker (Unisex) (9.5 Women’s in Black / Black / Grey)

I love nostalgic tennis shoes! And I love a black nostalgic tennis shoe as you can see in my post, 30 Favorite Super Cute Adidas Shoes Outfit Ideas. New Balance sneakers are having a moment along with Adidas and Tretorns. These remind me of my dad who had a navy pair when I was a kid. When I saw them, I knew I would wear them with black trouser pants, wide leg black pants, and black shorts. And so many other things!

The reviews suggest you size up and I went up a half size from 9 to 9.5 and they feel great on! Nordstrom has a few left in larger sizes so I’m linking to another store that also sells them, but they’ll be full price.

Outfit 8: Charles by Charles David Wynter Pointed Toe Bootie (9M, OAK) + Loft Wide Leg Jeans + J.Crew Cotton Poplin Striped Button Down

When it comes to ankle boots, after toying with a lot of different pairs, I decided to go out of my comfort zone and order ankle boots with a Western edge.

I tried this pair on so many different ways and then ended up with an outfit that’s a little bit classic thanks to the striped button-down shirt, and a little bit trendy thanks to the wide-leg jeans and Western boots.

I was shocked that these ankle boots are comfortable. I always worry about pointy-toe boots. But my feet are perfectly comfy and not pinched at all. I’m surprised that the stacked heel is 3.5-inches because they are so much more comfortable and easier to walk in than the knee-high boots I tried above. The lowest point of the stacked heel is 2-inches high so that must make a big difference in comfort.

I’m still mulling these over. Anytime anyone tries a new style, it’s good to wear it around the house a bit to give it a chance to grow on you. That’s the stage I’m in.

Outfit 9: SARTO by Franco Sarto Anina Pointed Toe Boot (9.5M, Black) + Loft Wide Leg Jeans + Old Navy Wide Striped Cardigan

Here’s another experiment with stepping out of my comfort zone with another Western-inspired pair of ankle boots. I sized up a half size and these were equally comfortable with a low heel of 2.25 inches. As I walked, my ankle kept toppling to the side. It turns out they have a tapered heel. The block heel is in the shape of a triangle and the point of the triangle is at the back of the heel. You have to be careful not to twist your ankle. These boots would get a high rating for their height and comfort but the heel knocks off a few points.

Here’s a side view of the sneakers and ankle boots.

Outfit 10: Bernardo Double Breasted Twill Coat (Medium, NAVY) + Gap Kick Crop Jeans + Grey Turtleneck Sweater

In this look, the Nordstrom piece is this stunning long navy coat. When I first pulled it out of the package I was surprised that the fabric has a light ribbing to it that adds a bit of texture. It’s a twill fabric that makes this a good transitional weather coat. It also has shoulder pads.

You’ll notice that pairing a long coat with more casual pieces like jeans and a sweater is a very popular way to style your long coat going into cooler months.

The coat steals the show and instantly elevates the look.

You can also wear this length with longer midi skirts and dresses and the coat will either cover the skirt entirely or only show a few inches.

I was curious to try a wool blend coat and immediately ordered this navy belted coat, which hasn’t arrived yet.

Outfit 11: Avec Les Filles Cocoon Relaxed Fit Tweed Blazer (Medium, SALT/ PEPPER) + Gap Factory Crewneck Tee + Gap Kick Crop Jeans + Stan Smith Tennis Shoes

In this look, the blazer is the Nordstrom piece I’m trying. I was looking for a blazer with texture and contrast and boy did I get it! This blazer is nubby with black, white, and grey tones to it. The collar is very large and the pockets are pronounced. When you see this blazer, you’d instantly think to style it very conservatively with black trouser pants, and loafers. But I wanted to use it unexpectedly in a laid-back look and put it over straight jeans, a long-sleeve shirt, and white sneakers. And it works!

Ultimately, it’s getting returned because the collar and pockets are a little too much.
