How do you dress casually but classy?

To dress casually but classy, you can’t go wrong with a monochromatic look or an outfit built on neutral colors. Choose pieces that fit you well with beautiful fabrics and tailoring. If you wear a monochrome or minimal outfit, use accessories to add visual interest. If you have bold elements in your clothing, keep the accessories more minimal. Choose classic styles like dark jeans without distressing, a well-cut blazer, or a fitted dress or pencil skirt. Try pointy-toe pumps, knee-high leather boots, ankle boots, or elegant flats for shoes.

What do you wear to a casual Christmas event?

Your goal for a casual Christmas event is to look polished and put together without being overly formal. Add a festive touch by wearing a holiday color. Embrace the festive spirit in a sweater dress with knee-high boots, a holiday sweater or button-down shirt, and trousers or dark jeans. Try a casual dress and knee-high boots. A tailored statement coat is the perfect complement to a smart casual look.

How do you accessorize your holiday outfits?

When wearing minimal outfits, holiday accessories create visual interest in your look. It’s a great time to swap your everyday jewelry for unique statement pieces. For these looks, I have a handful of accessories and shoes that I’m mixing and matching again and again. You don’t need a ton of pieces, just pieces that work well and make sense together. Here’s a roundup of accessories for your classy casual outfits.

15 Classy casual Christmas outfits

1. A velvet blazer, striped ruffle-neck button-down, green vest, and flare jeans

When buying these black pointy-toe ankle wrap pumps with a rhinestone brooch, I didn’t realize how perfect they would look with this black velvet blazer. These heels are from Amazon and have a low heel and padded footbed. Ann Taylor is showing a similar pair. If you only plan to wear them 2 to 3 times this season, I say go for the budget-friendly pair. This look is a little bit preppy, thanks to the striped ruffle-neck blue button-down and the green vest for a pop of color. I feel green doesn’t get as much attention during the holidays, so I want to change that. Plus, you can wear this green vest in Spring! It also comes in red, if that’s more your thing.

A black velvet blazer brings an equestrian vibe reminiscent of Ralph Lauren, and that’s a great thing in my book! I’ve been looking for a black velvet blazer for a few years and had to jump on this one. It’s a classic staple that can be worn for years to come. Rhinestone black satin heels and a rhinestone bag take this look to another level. Flare jeans in a dark wash are super sharp, but wear black trousers if you want something even fancier. Wear this to a holiday party where the dress code is smart casual.

2. A black velvet blazer, black shirt, and flare jeans

Who doesn’t want to wear all black with jeans and have it look elegant? Layer your velvet blazer over a black top and tuck it into flare jeans. These flare jeans are more elevated than other styles thanks to their dark wash, long length, and width at the hem, which looks elegant with heels or boots with a heel. Add a statement necklace, earrings, and those rhinestone embellished ankle wrap pumps and silver metallic bag, and you are ready to go!

3. A red Christmas sweater, blue striped ruffle-neck blouse, and flare jeans

You can tell I’ve been having some fun playing with this blue ruffle-neck blouse. Here, I’m pairing it with my favorite Christmas sweater of all time. This red Dalmatian sweater was from J.Crew Factory several years back, and I love it so much. In this look, I’m elevating it with a striped button-down underneath. Front tuck it to reveal a brown belt that matches brown knee-high boots. A brown crossbody bag finishes the look.

Wear this casual outfit to a holiday event at your kid’s school, an informal neighborhood potluck, or even on Christmas day when you’re hosting family. A Christmas sweater is the perfect option for a festive outfit, so pull your cute and ugly Christmas sweaters out of the back of your closet.

4. A red plaid shirt, black velvet blazer, and flare jeans

This red plaid shirt is another old J.Crew Factory find. There are a ton of similar shirts out there this year. I was so tempted to spring for another one but couldn’t rationalize it in the end. Red plaid makes such a festive outfit with this black velvet blazer. A black belt defines the waistline, and classic black pointy-toe ankle boots and a black bag finish the look. Notice how this bag has a structured square body with a top handle and a long strap. The square body elevates the look, as does the top handle. This is a bag that easily transitions from everyday use to a special event bag.

5. A cream ruffle-neck turtleneck, black velvet blazer, and flare jeans

I didn’t realize how many black velvet blazer outfits I made until now. It just goes to show how versatile it is! This is a more minimalist outfit paired with a cream cashmere blend ruffle-neck turtleneck. The gold chain necklace with a pearl bobble is essential for adding another element of interest to the look. As is the gold and black belt.

6. A Blackwatch plaid button-down, black velvet blazer, and kick-crop jeans

Here’s a more casual look, thanks to more casual jeans. Every winter, I bring out this Blackwatch plaid shirt. This look is the perfect choice for a relaxed holiday lunch.

7. A gold metallic blouse, flare jeans, and a black leather jacket

This is the ultimate party blouse! I wasn’t sure how I would like this metallic blouse, but it is gorgeous. I’ve never worn something like this before. But it is so fun and an attention grabber. Flare jeans and a black leather jacket give an edge to the look. This is the blouse I was imagining wearing these shoes with. The sparkle on the shoes ties into the sparkly top and clutch. This is my favorite option for a holiday happy hour.

8. Burgundy cardigan, blue striped ruffle-neck button down, and coated wide-leg jeans

This outfit layers several different textures to create more visual interest. Don’t be afraid to pull in darker shades of red if they feel more like you. This burgundy cable-knit cardigan is preppy along with the striped button-down, so pairing them with coated wide-leg jeans with a faux leather feel gives an unexpected edgy vibe to the outfit. This is a perfect look for cold weather when you want the cozy vibes of a thick cardigan.

9. A red plaid dress

This red plaid makes such a festive dress! I love the black velvet details on the neckline and cuffs of this red dress. I replaced the cloth belt with my favorite black and gold belt for more presence and waist definition. Pushing up the sleeves also helps with that. The fabric in this dress is sort of thin. I’d love it even more if the dress were flannel. This would be perfect for Christmas dinner and pictures in front of the Christmas tree.

10. A velvet black dress

I have a hard time finding dresses with an a-line skirt that fit my pear-shaped body. Dresses that fit my size 12 rear are often too large up top for my more petite upper body with a 36-B bust. But this velvet dress is a perfect fit! It has relatively long sleeves with a ruffle at the wrist, and I’d love it more if they were shorter and less pronounced. But they have elastic in the wrist, so they’re easy to push up. Accessorizing the look is a good idea to amp up the style factor. Adding this black belt helps to define the waistline. A statement necklace, earrings, and bracelets add shine and visual interest.

11. A black sweater dress and checked long coat

This black sweater dress is the little black dress that keeps on giving. It works for so many situations. I wore it last year to my husband’s office party. I’m again accessorizing it with that favorite black belt and these heeled knee-high boots for an elevated feel. Add some black tights to stay warmer in cold weather. I don’t have a long gold necklace I like right now, but that would’ve been a great addition to decorate the neckline. Now, let’s talk about this coat! It’s a statement coat, for sure, with a black and white check. It’s a weighty coat with a texture that reminds me of a fur coat. It feels so decadent on. It was a real step out of my comfort zone when I added it to my cart. And I wasn’t sure I’d like it until I started playing around with styling it. But now I love it. It’s fun to wear things you don’t usually wear.

12. A red plaid blouse and coated jeans

I took this outfit photo as an afterthought, never expecting to like it. I just happened to have all those pieces on at once. I was surprised to love the exciting juxtaposition created by pairing a plaid flannel shirt with coated wide-leg jeans and these suede rhinestone pointy-toe pumps.

It’s festive and a little bit edgy.

13. A gold metallic blouse and coated jeans

This is the outfit I’m thinking about wearing to my husband’s office Christmas party this year. Women wear casual dresses and pants. This is a party blouse for sure, and I love the cool edginess it has when it’s paired with these leather pants. Those sparkly satin pumps with a pop of metallic from the rhinestones tie in perfectly with the blouse. And the silver rhinestone bag adds even more sparkle. I wore my gold mother-of-pearl clover necklace and large pearl drop earrings for jewelry.

14. A black lace pencil skirt and black shirt

This outfit is so elegant that you can wear it like a little black dress to a semi-formal party. You can’t go wrong with a classic black look. The lace pencil skirt hits below the knee and is so classy. It has a grosgrain ribbon detail around the waistband, a zipper at the back, and a black slit. The lace material has some weight that helps smooth the midsection. I have a little extra around the middle, but it smoothes the belly nicely. I am also wearing shapewear with it. This shirt was a surprise find from Nordstrom Rack. It has a slightly elevated puff sleeve and a slim fit that you really need tucked into this slim-fitting skirt. I tried tucking a turtleneck sweater into it, which was too thick.

These suede and leather kitten heel d’Orsay pointy-toe pumps give it an elegant old Hollywood feel, adding to the more formal look. Add some statement pieces like this silver rhinestone clutch that draws in a pop of sparkle from the necklace and earrings. A red holiday lip would be perfect here if that feels like you.

15. A magenta blouse and coated jeans

Don’t hesitate to branch out and wear different colors to your holiday Christmas party. Vibrant gem tones are a fun way to create a stunning look. Magenta is Pantone’s color of the year. Here, I’m pairing it with edgy coated wide-leg jeans for a cool vibe.
