I love wearing jeans; I’d wear them for everything if I could. When I have an event on the calendar, I usually have several outfit options ready to go. But I’d always rather be wearing jeans. Jeans are approachable, versatile, stylish, and timeless.

But what about wearing jeans in the summer? Can you wear them in the hottest months of the year?

As we step into mid-June, I’m still reaching for my favorite pair of jeans. Our weather was overcast early this week and 80 degrees, and jeans were pleasantly comfortable. Jeans can also be a great option on unpredictable, rainy summer days.

In this post, I’ll cover when it makes sense to wear jeans in the summer, whether you can wear jeans in 90-degree weather, styling tips for wearing jeans in the heat, and how to put together jeans outfits in the summer with 10 summer outfit ideas to inspire you.

When does it make sense to wear jeans in the summer?

There are times when wearing jeans in the summer makes sense. For example, you’ll be in an air-conditioned room in an office building, hotel, or convention center for a conference. Or you’re going to a movie theater, restaurant, library, or grocery store.

Consider the climate where you live or are visiting. Jeans are more comfortable in the summer when temperatures are in the 60s to low 80s or when you are on the coast with low humidity and cool ocean breezes.

Can you wear jeans in 90-degree weather?

You can wear jeans in 90-degree weather, but the last thing you want is to swelter in the hot summer weather. There are some things to keep in mind when choosing your jeans to help you stay comfortable. Choosing a loose-fit cut, like wide-leg or baggy jeans, is a great way to create airflow and keep your body temperature low. Cropped or cuffed jeans are also a good option since they let your ankles breathe. If denim with rips at the knees is part of your style, distressed jeans can also feel cooler. Skip skinny jeans since they trap body heat directly against your skin.

Lighter shades like white, ecru, or light blue jeans reflect rather than absorb light and absorb less heat from the sun.

Consider the fabric weight and content of your jeans. Lighter denim tends to feel softer and more flexible, and a higher cotton count will be more breathable.

Styling tips for wearing jeans in summer

When putting together jeans outfits in summer, opt for lightweight, breathable tops in cotton, linen, or rayon.

Open-toed shoes or sandals are a great option for staying cooler. If you need to wear closed-toe shoes, pick shoes you can wear without socks, like ballet flats or loafers, to keep your body temperature down.

Let’s take a look at 10 outfit ideas that will inspire you to put together summer outfits with jeans in warm weather.

10 summer jeans outfits

1. A flowy top, cropped jeans, and platform slide sandals

These high-rise kick-cropped white jeans are my favorite pair of jeans to wear with flowy tops on summer days. When you’re wearing fitted jeans in the hips and thighs, a flowy top untucked is a great option for creating airflow. It also creates balanced proportions when you’re wearing slimmer-fitting jeans in the hips and thighs.

Choosing a top with ¾ sleeves can work well when you are in heavy air conditioning and don’t want to carry a sweater with you. This top is a linen and cotton blend. Linen is excellent for allowing air to circulate.

Fit note: For reference, I have a midsized triangle body shape, 5’6”, 162-ish lbs, and a 36-B bust. I wear a small or medium top with size 12 jeans.

Jeans that end above the ankle keep you cooler and work great with any kind of sandals.

2. A short sleeve flowy blouse, cropped jeans, and platform slide sandals

This short-sleeved flowy blouse is super lightweight, so you barely feel like you have anything on. Its short sleeves and airy fit are perfect for warmer months

I’m wearing it with high rise cropped jeans that are fitted in the hips and thighs. On super hot days, when I’m wearing high rise fitted jeans, I find that they feel sticky in the midsection, stretch more, and are more likely to droop at the waist. That’s when it’s nice to add a belt or wear jeans with a wider leg in the hips and thighs.

3. A sleeveless blouse, wide leg cropped jeans, and sandals

These ecru cropped jeans have a high waist and a wider leg, allowing for more airflow in hot weather. This silky cap-sleeve blouse can be left untucked or tucked in, but when I’m wearing wide leg jeans, I like to tuck in a looser shirt to create more balanced proportions and keep the outfit from looking frumpy.

4. A t-shirt, wide leg cropped jeans, and barely there sandals

A cotton tee is a good thing to wear in the summer heat. Your sweat will dampen the tee, helping you cool off. However, this can be a downside if you sweat a lot in the heat and then go inside and sit in the same clothes. You’ll get cold and uncomfortable.

These jeans are 98% cotton with a wide leg for breathability and comfort.

5. A tank top, wide-leg cuffed jeans, and sandals

A cotton tank top is a great option for keeping cool in the summer. The slim fit creates balanced proportions when paired with wide leg jeans. These wide leg cuffed jeans are another option that can be more comfortable in the summer heat since the shorter cuffed length reveals the ankles and allows for more air flow.

6. A button-down shirt, cuffed jeans, and platform slides

I’ve been loving French blue and light shades of blue this summer. It’s the perfect watery blue that’s light, fresh, and airy and reflects sunlight. This Amazon blouse has airy puff sleeves and is 100% cotton. I’m pairing it with cuffed wide leg jeans and creating an elevated casual look by skipping a belt and wearing platform slides.

7. A tan and white sleeveless striped blouse, medium light blue kick crop jeans, and platform slides

This striped sleeveless blouse is light and airy with a little flutter sleeve. These kick crop jeans from Loft are part of their summer denim line. They’re a medium to light blue cotton blend and are soft, stretchy, thin, and comfy for summer wear.

8. A cotton poplin blouse with medium light blue kick crop jeans, and platform slides

A white cotton poplin blouse is lightweight and breathable, with a smooth, crisp texture that keeps you cool and comfy in hot weather. I’m wearing those thin and soft high-rise kick crop jeans again.

9. A light blue cotton poplin blouse, high rise kick crop white jeans, and brown slides

This light blue color is so fresh for summer and is perfect paired with white jeans. I’m adding a brown belt here. Wearing a belt is a great option if your high-waisted jeans begin to slip down your waist in hot weather. This is a great little summer work outfit if your office lets you wear jeans.

10. A flowy blouse, white high rise kick crop jeans, and brown slides

I love the color blue in the summer, especially this blue and white swingy blouse. The sleeves and hemline are wider and cooling. The kick crop jeans are fitted in the hips and thighs to create balanced proportions with a looser-fitting top.

Wearing jeans in the summer season can be comfortable and stylish if you choose the right type and style. Opt for lightweight denim fabrics and loose-fitting, cropped, or cuffed styles to enhance breathability. Light color jeans reflect sunlight, keeping you cooler than dark ones. Pair your jeans with tops made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, and choose open-toed shoes or sandals to improve air circulation.
